Having direct access to the river, fishing is available from the shade of the gardens and for the artist in you the gardens and the river are ideal for sketching or painting. For the energetic folk, there are numerous signed foot and cycle paths in the surrounding countryside and nearby Aulnay Forest and the Marais Poitevin (Green Venice). Swimming, horseriding, Go-Karting, golf and tennis are all available nearby.

Dampierre sur Boutonne: Your nearest village, is a short drive away from your cottage and has the advantage of a village shop, a Boulangerie for your fresh baguettes and croissants, Boucherie and a  bar/restaurant for reasonably priced meals with local wines. There is a 10th Century Renaissance chateau with the River Boutonne running through it. On the outskirts is a Donkey Sanctuary.

Aulnay: The nearest town where a small but lively market is held every Thursday and Sunday morning. The town provides all your basic requirements; Supermarket, banks, cash machines, restaurants and bars and a chemist. The tourist information office opposite the 12th Century church will provide you with all the additional help you may need for the area.

Saint Jean d'Angely - An interesting market town with markets twice a week, supermarkets, banks, chemist and restaurants and shops. The town also has a modern indoor swimming complex with the river nearby and a huge boating lake set in a lovely park with cafes, crazy golf and children's play area.

La Rochelle - An old harbour town, together with its world famous aquarium. Relax in one of the countless cafés and restaurants which cluster around the waterfront or explore the boutiques which line the cobbled and arcaded streets of the old town.
